Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on 4 April 1972 located in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The family was dominated by her grandmother, and she was an only child. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls After graduating, she was accepted into Temple University. She studied secondary education over there while working two jobs. She was hoping to become a high-school English teacher. The dream of becoming a high-school English teacher, was cut short after she quit school. Her first job was as a spoken word artist who performed her own works in live poetry readings. She later joined forces with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their collaboration song, was composed by the duo. The singer was initially spotted as an artiste at a Roots Show. After that, she secured collaborations with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained experience in performing through the Canada production of Broadway's show Rent. She was the first artist signed by Hidden Beach Recordings.
